Tom Cruise stars in Oblivion, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.

Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete.

Living in and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

Oblivion was shot in stunning digital 4K resolution on location across the United States and Iceland.

It's based on a graphic novel from Joseph Kosinski who is also the director of the movie. The only other movie he has directed is TRON: Legacy but apparently he's also suppose to be making the Logan's Run remake.

Trailer shows some promise, but instead of being an interesting and insightful look into a post-humanity world, it'll probably be an explodyfest.

Prediction: Humanity didn't actually 'win' against whatever invaded, just lost or came to a truce. Tom Cruize isn't repairing maintenance drones, he's repairing baddie tech to suppress the last humans who are trying to live free on Earth. Secret lady is his mom in stasis or something retarded. Tom Cruize is basically Neo.

To be fair though this time I think the poster is appropriate. Gives a sense of how empty the planet feels and how much in ruin it is.

Somebody needs to go on a tear and find all movie posters from the last year with a single character, back to the viewer is looking at some large, monolithic structure or barren wasteland. Here's another one.

Not like this is some isolated incident. A quick search for "movie poster themes" yields a ton of repetition over the years. Here's one compilation:

This current trend of posters is just a variation of Example 1 in the link above ("A Loner Viewed From Behind").

Remember the *good* cliches we used to have? Like hand-drawn posters?

There's another cliche as well that's not on that list, which is that indie movie posters are often yellow-themed (think Little Miss Sunshine). I'm too lazy to find a composite example, but it's out there somewhere.
