New LUPIN III TV show: "The Woman Called Fujiko Mine"

Postby kenzo » Mar 8th, 2012 @ 4:55am

Image
The series revolves around the character of Fujiko Mine, depicting her and the rest of the Lupin III cast during their younger days. The series will reportedly capture the "sensuality" present in Monkey Punch's original Lupin III manga in its "daring interpretation" of the franchise.

It's like X-Mas, my birthday, and every other holiday for the next decade came early! Show starts April 4th, and is currently 13 episodes long.

It looks totally bananas! Look at how cray Lupin looks! If it's trying to be closer to the OG Monkey Punch comics, that shit is going to be dark, fucked up, and awesome. Look at this poster!

I dunno man, this seems kind of exploitative and dumb. I'll give it a shot I guess but the pleasure centers in my brain aren't ignited by this yet.

The pleasure centers on my brain overloaded and fried out on this news.

A lot of what has been wrong with Lupin III in the past two plus decades has been stagnancy - a staff of writers, animators, and voice actors that have been largely content to coax along, riding the coat tails of people's nostalgia, and putting in the minimum amount of effort required to maintain the brand. You know, typical shit that you hate the lazier parts of Japan for. This new show might be short, but it's got a whole new staff, and most of the voice actors are new (which is great because most of the OG voice actors sounded like they've had one foot in the grave the past few years - Fake edit: also, these new V.O.'s they've got are really good and perfect for their new roles).

Hearing that this show is trying to go for the OG Monkey Punch comic feel is music to my ears. Did you ever read the old comics, or watch the first half of the original 1972 series? That Lupin is dark, sexy, violent, edgey, adult, and all kinds of awesome. I love the Miyazaki-Lupin, but I love edgy-Lupin even more. The unconventional character designs (done by the guy who did Afro Samurai) look a lot like the Monkey Punch drawings. I'm just completely beside myself. I couldn't be more hyped for something right now.

Edit: As for being dumb/exploitative, are you talking about making Fujiko the main character? Because honestly, to me that's probably one of the more interesting things about this. It's something fresh and new, and the new possibilities this opens up are endless. Plus, the director for this is a woman, so I don't think this is completely for the sake of fan service and retardedness - they should be able to do interesting things with this.

Dude, Fujiko is completely nude in the promo art you just posted... If this turns out to be good, then great. But I watch Lupin for fucking Lupin. I would be equally disinterested in a Jigen or Goemon centric series. Maybe a little less so for Jigen, but still. This just seems like an excuse to mine some classic material for another sexy lady anime. I don't see any way for this to be as fun as the original 70s shows.

Dude, I dunno what show you're remembering - Fujiko was nude all over the place in the 70s. In fact, post-Miyazaki Lupin is pretty notable for how not-sexy and childish the franchise becomes. All the Lupin III characters are fairly one-dimensional, including Lupin. They're just very quirky (especially Lupin) and therefore memorable. Fujiko becomes extraordinarily boring though, because her defining characteristic (being a femme fatale that actually shags up with Lupin every now and then) is taken away later on as the franchise evolves. I don't see any reason why she can't have her own ridiculous Lupin-esque capers/shenanigans when given primary billing and her sexuality back.

And actually, Lupin III in the OG comics is more like a secondary character anyways. Most of the comics are about the other characters (like Zenigata or the people Lupin is about to ripoff) freaking out and trying to prepare for Lupin to make his move, and then Lupin moves in like a force of nature, bypassing security, wrecking shit, and murdering people left and right in order to do whatever he set out to do. I could totally get behind a new show where his character returns to that kind of secondary role.

The more I look into this, the only thing that gives me pause is that the "Series Composition" (basically, the job of the head writer) is done by Mari Okada, and I'm not a big fan of her works. But she's more than competent at developing good pacing for a show, and having the head writer and the director both be women assuages a lot of my concerns that this show would be overly exploitative.

I think I'll need new pants on hand when this finally comes out...I love the art style in the trailer so much.

After seeing such funky promo art but not seeing anything from the actual show, I was becoming really worried that this was going to be a case of Final Fantasy, where the concept art isn't reflective of the final product:
Spoiler: show
Amano's OG concept art for FF9:

CG from the game:

But I'm thrilled that what little bits of actual animation that's in there is mostly reflective of the concept art I've seen floating about on the internet.

And damn, I like that music they've got going on there. It's very olden tyme French, and that's something Lupin has been missing for a long-ass time. In the past 20 years or so, Lupin went from being the ethnically ambiguous international thief reportedly descendant from a Frenchman, to a very Japanese, by the numbers anime reliant on routine and familiar Japanese motifs. The music reminds me a lot of the new Sherlock Holmes movies, and if they can kind of go down that route of a stylized period-piece rather than the continual (and abysmal) modernization of the character, then I'll be tickled pink. Lupin is at its best when it's less concerned with off-the-wall-insane gadgets and more on being a sneaky yet skillful, slight-of-hand crook (example: my favorite part of Cagliostro is when he's casually but in a very realistic manner, making the fake ring with a little soldering/chem set while carrying on a conversation with Jigen).

Amano's art is too good to be turned into a shitty video game.

His watercolors and wispy lines have been too complicated for pixels and polygons traditionally. But I think it can be done eventually. The Vanillaware games like Odin Sphere could probably accommodate an Amano art style if they tried. Man, can you imagine a game that looked like that?

But that aside, hnnnnngggghhhnnnnnn! This show is one week away! Can't wait!
