Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close looks like such Oscar bait.

Though, I can say that both The Artist and Midnight in Paris are fantastic films.

I saw Hugo over the weekend. It demonstrated 3D technology applied right can dazzle.
The story may prove to be a little too family friendly to earn a Best Picture Oscar, but I hope it takes home some of its technical nominations. Hugo was mis-marketed IMO. The trailers seem to suggest it's a cat and mouse story about a bumbling train station security officer and a boy. While it does feature both, the story is really about preservation, namely preservation of old film and preservation of character. Midnight in Paris is a fine film, but I didn't leave the theater with the impression it would be an Oscar contender. Tintin should have been nominated for best animated picture, whereas Puss in Boots shouldn't have. Billy Crystal is hosting the Oscars, so I'm inclined to watch them this year.

On a side note, my favorite Oscar moment of all-time was delivered several years back by Steve Martin during one his Oscar opening monologues. This was the first year the Oscars were being broadcast in HD. Back then, HD TVs were still somewhat of a luxury item. Steve eluded to the fact that for the first time ever the Oscars were being broadcast in this newfangled hi-res HD format. He then proceeded to wave hello to everyone watching at Circuit City (the joke being very few people actually had access to a HD television). I was working at Circuit City at the time and had just set up an HD antenna to the television so we could watch the show (normally, the set was tuned into a company fed loop). It was sort of surreal tuning in the show only to have Steve Martin wave hello to everyone at Circuit City mere moments later. Some of the customers walking by gave the kind of shocked look one might reserve for Allen Funt.

The funnier part of this story is that Circuit City doesn't exist anymore.

You got that right. Nothing, and I mean nothing, is funnier than thousands of people losing their jobs.

Sweet!
I'm glad to see the Cupertino location listed amongst the participating theaters.
Though if I'm not mistaken, Feb. 25th coincides with the Image Expo.

Watched "The Artist" last night. Very entertaining and a lot of panache. Of all the nominees, I definitely think this one's the front runner for Best Picture.

"Oscar Voters Overwhelmingly White, Male"

LA Times wrote:A Los Angeles Times study found that academy voters are markedly less diverse than the moviegoing public, and even more monolithic than many in the film industry may suspect. Oscar voters are nearly 94% Caucasian and 77% male, The Times found. Blacks are about 2% of the academy, and Latinos are less than 2%.

Oscar voters have a median age of 62, the study showed. People younger than 50 constitute just 14% of the membership.

I just thought it was interesting. Apparently there's also an assload of people who still vote, but have nothing to do with the film industry anymore.

Which just goes to show some people are easily pleased,
as does Bret McKenzie taking home Oscar gold for Man or a Muppet.

I find it amusing that the Best Picture winner was a silent movie and that the best song category only had two nominees this year.
My guess is the Oscar voters are sick of hearing their fellow 1%.

Yes it was, though I managed to miss the first 15 minutes of the film. When the "turn off your cell phone" reminder played, I reached for mine only to realize it was no longer there. The device had fallen out of my coat, so I rushed back to restaurant. Fortunately, the theater and the restaurant (Blowfish Sushi to Die For) were both in the same shopping center, albeit on opposite ends.

As if Jim Rash winning for The Deanscendants screenplay was not enough to make the show worth watching, this happened.
