I wish they wouldn't do this, but I also know that if they are, I'll be glued to Twitter for the entirety of that broadcast likely ending with me saying this:

And it looks like they'll be simulcasting the announcement on BBC America at 2pm ET. 30 minutes away.

The Twelfth Doctor is Peter Capaldi.

I actually heard this one a couple days ago from some MTV blog or something but it also included a fake script with Peter Capaldi (as the Doctor) swearing up and down, so I didn't believe it.

Funny fact though, in World War Z he is credited as WHO Doctor (World Health Organization). I wonder if that was some clever reference or just a coincidence.

Don't know who that is but I think it's good that the Doctor is A. older, 2. not black, and d. not a woman, so I'm happy. Is Stephen Moffet off the show yet? I might even start watching it again.

Neat to see Paul McGann play The Doctor again, even if it's just a mini-episode.

Kind of important to watch this prior to the 50th.

No it's not. It's something they can (and probably will) explain with a few lines of dialogue during the show so everyone's on the same page as to who exactly John Hurt is playing. I'm sure if you don't watch it, you won't be lost during the 50th anniversary episode. This was a just an excuse to bring Paul McGann back for a bit (which I have no issue with). The issue I do have now is that this makes Christopher Ecclestone's absence from the 50th even more glaring. The story for the episode is going to revolve around the Time War, and they don't have the regeneration of the Doctor directly *after* the Time War. This short shows us the transition from 8 to War Doctor, but we won't see what happens to go from War Doctor to 9 (at least, I'm assuming we won't- they could always use some CGI fakery to make Ecclestone "appear" in the episode).

I feel that it provides a sort of essential context leading into The Day of the Doctor that can't be distilled in a few lines of dialogue.

Spoilers for the 7 minute mini-episode...but seriously, watch it.
Spoiler: show
It's more than just McGann regenerating into Hurt, it's the context that the Doctor is wholly reviled in the universe during the Time War that someone would rather die in a crash rather than be saved by him. It shows that McGann felt like if he was going to be deemed as the same as the rest of the Time Lords that he may as well become a warrior in the Time War and actually be guilty of that. He was completely resigned to that fate when he made that choice.

Either way you go, any part of getting more of the Eighth Doctor is a big thumbs up in my book. He was so funny and interesting in the movie. I sincerely hope that he's in the 50th, but I'm not holding my breath.

Yeah, the 50th was pretty much the coolest thing ever.

That said, cool as it was, I have a couple of problems with it.

Spoiler: show
First would be their characterization of the Time War. In the past, it was always described as this battle that engulfed ALL of space and time with insane weapons beyond imagining that eventually led to the destruction of all existence. Like the sides were throwing black holes at each other and shit.

In this, it's just a bunch of Dalek ships bombing Galafrey. And guys on the ground with laser guns. Not really sure how that consumes all existence.

Second, they make it seem like the Doctor thought he destroyed Galafrey, but in secret, he actually sealed it away in a moment of time. Except, that's what he ALWAYS said he did. The only difference is that he thought he sealed the Daleks AND the Time Lords away instead of just the Time Lords. I mean, there was a whole thing of the Time Lords freeing themselves from the Time Lock. James Bond was in it and everything! He KNEW he didn't burn them. So what was all that about?

I also feel like they've wasted about a million potential stories by tying up the Warrior-Doctor's story in this one episode. That seems like the kind of thing they could have mined for quite awhile.

For those who enjoyed Paul McGann as the Doctor, you should check this film out:

Withnail and I. Also starring the Great Intelligence, Richard E Grant. Very British, very early 80s, very strange...

Decided to go back and watch the second half of last season. Or try to. The first episode had an evil AI that was abducting human minds via wifi internet and uploading them to the cloud... What in the actual fuck happened to this show?

To be fair that evil AI has been a villain in Doctor Who since the Second Doctor.

Potential rumor spoilers:

Spoiler: show
There are rumors circulating that Peter Capaldi might only be the Doctor for one season/series and that Steven Moffat might be nearing the end of his own 'Who' run.
