Still watching "Hide", but I'm really enjoying it so far. It may be my new favorite episode to get people interested in the show.

Apparently the blurays shipped early, so people have already seen the finale!

I liked the last episode. Is there only one more? I thought there were two?

I hope I can avoid spoilers in the interim.

Yeah, this was a great episode IMO. They explained how Clara shows up everywhere. They set up the ability for them to have multiple Doctors for the 50th Anniversary special. And, as you stated, they introduced John Hurt as the Doctor. November 23rd can't get here soon enough for this. Months of speculation and debates over whether the John Hurt Doctor is between McGann and Eccleston, pre-Hartnell, or post-Smith (my money's on a pre-Hartnell Doctor character).

Edit: the screenshot I posted originally disappeared.

Most likely this is the Time War Doctor, but the more I think about the more possible it seems that John Hurt is playing a pre-Hartnell Doctor. I mean one of the things we keep saying is that we learn why The Doctor has been running for so long. I mean they could just be talking post-Time War, but they said he's been running all his life, so maybe we learn what made The Doctor start his journey all those years ago.

I was waiting for the Doctor to say Valeyard but the moment John Hurt started talking I knew he wasn't the Valeyard.

I've heard people say that he's gonna be called The Moment (as in "the moment the time of the Time Lords ended" or something like that).

I've heard that as well and this is the only thing that is making me go back and watch The Trial of a Time Lord from Colin Baker's run. And that's pretty much the only thing that can make me go back and watch any part of Colin Baker's run. I'm tempted to watch from that last series of the 6th Doctor and then all of the 7th before November -- when I was growing up I feel like I remember watching a lot of 3rd, 4th, and 5th, but not much after or before.

I'm tempted to watch from that last series of the 6th Doctor and then all of the 7th before November -- when I was growing up I feel like I remember watching a lot of 3rd, 4th, and 5th, but not much after or before.

Almost everything after "The Five Doctors" was nigh-unwatchable. (For some bizarre reason lots of fans love "The Caves of Androzani" - the last Davison episode - but I thought it was godawful.) The only Colin Baker episode I thought was much good was "Mark of the Rani". Of the McCoy episodes, only "Battlefield" and "Survival" worked for me. (Many fans loved "The Curse of Fenric", which I thought was a nice try but needed at least three more rewrites to make any sense.) (To be fair, most fans hate "Survival", which I understand, but I think it's a rare episode whose themes transcend its shaky plot.)

Anyway, that's probably why you don't remember much after Davison. :)

The Hartnell and Troughton episodes are really from a different era. In both writing and direction, the producers of the show hadn't quite gotten up to speed on presenting stories for a video format, they often feel more like stage productions. Compare to contemporary shows like The Avengers to see just how far behind the curve they were. That (along with the fact that many pre-Pertwee stories had missing episodes, and they weren't in color) is a big part of the reason why not many people saw them until the advent of DVD - no TV station was interested in picking them up for broadcast.

(Then watch the first season of Pertwee where it seemed like they'd assimilated TV production in one fell swoop but forgot how to keep 4 episodes of story from sprawling to 7. Yeesh.)

Anyway.

I expect Hurt will end up playing a past Doctor (a young first Doctor, an older eighth Doctor, a forgotten ninth Doctor, or some alternate-universe Doctor). Given the way he's been presented, I will feel cheated if he's a future Doctor. (I'm still trying to figure out where the Watcher in "Logopolis" came from.)

It safe to talk about this or is talking about that link kinda getting in to spoiler territory?

Spoiler: show
There are a few rumors I've seen going around the internet, but the two biggest ones are Damian Lewis and Ben Daniels. Even if it isn't either of those two it appears the focus is on older actors, meaning we're probably gonna get an older Doctor again.

Yes, but it hasn't happened yet, so I was wondering whether or not it's spoiler territory.

Spoiler: show
Also I just heard Daniel Percival as a possible for the next Doctor, and it's so out there that it seems believable.

I'm betting on either Ian McKellon or Patrick Stewart.

Or maybe Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie - they switch off each episode in little mini-regenerations.
