If you haven't seen it you need to watch the Masters of Horor episode Deer Woman.

Animals
Image
An unsuspecting, down-and-out man in a washed-up hick town has his life turned upside down when a drop-dead gorgeous stranger walks through the door of the local bar.

It was a good idea with horrible execution. On the plus side, the director is Douglas Aarniokoski (From Dusk Till Dawn, Once Upon a Time in Mexico) and stars Marc Blucas (Riley on Buffy), Naveen Andrews (Sayid on LOST) and Nicki Aycox (Meg on Supernatural).
Spoiler: show
If you watch the trailer, they essentially give away the whole plot of the movie.

Deer Woman
Image
Detective Dwight Faraday is a burned-out cop demoted to the 'weird calls' desk until a series of bizarre murders suddenly grabs his attention: men killed by massive blunt force while in a state of sexual arousal.

I have seen this before but forgot how much I enjoy the Masters of Horror series. This is another excellent episode. John Landis is a master of comedic horror.

Cigarette Burns
Image
With a torrid past that haunts him, a movie-theater director is hired to hunt for the only known print of a film so notorious that its single screening caused the viewers to become homicidally insane.

This movie is a disturbing and bleak return to top form for Carpenter. The plot is essentially the Ninth Gate. I highly recommend it.
Spoiler: show

The V Word
Image
Two curious teenage boys break into an old mortuary looking for thrills, only to find themselves stalked by a former teacher who is a very real vampire looking to increase the ranks of the undead.

I found this episode to be fairly mediocre. It did have an interesting transition that would ruin the best part of the episode talk about.
Spoiler: show

Incident On and Off a Mountain Road
Image
While driving in the night in a lonely road through the mountains, Ellen distracts with her radio and hits a car parked on the road. She faints and she looks for help since her car does not start again. She meets in the woods Moonface, a deranged monster-like man that collects human bodies pulling a woman. She is abducted by Moonface, but she recalls the survival lessons of her husband Bruce facing and fighting back the killer.

A slightly better than average episode. I did like the use of a strong female protagonist who wasn't wearing high heels in the middle of the forest.
Spoiler: show

Grave Encounters
Image
Lance Preston and the crew of "Grave Encounters", a ghost-hunting reality television show, are shooting an episode inside the abandoned Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital, where unexplained phenomena has been reported for years

I can't decide if this is a good VOD purchase. It is the Blair Witch Project set in the House on Haunted Hill. The found footage angle is a little tired but if you like the angry ghost genre this movie is decent.
Spoiler: show

From Within
Image
The residents of a small American town begin to die one-by-one apparently by suicide...

It is your typical vengeance on evangelical small town by heathen curse kind of movie. Worth a watch if you don't have to go out of your way.

I felt it was better than 3 but didn't come close to the brilliance of 1.

Will be checking out Scream 4 tomorrow.

Dreams in the Witch-house is another good Masters of Horror episode.

Attack the Block
Image
Attack the Block follows a gang of tough inner-city kids who try to defend their turf against an invasion of savage alien creatures, turning a South London apartment complex into an extraterrestrial warzone.

This is a fun little alien invasion romp. It leans more towards the comedy than horror but it was entertaining enough that I did not mind.
Spoiler: show

Near Dark
see comments in the moviebox thread

The Frightening
Image
Not long after Corey Patterson and his mother move into a new town, he is involved in a school rivalry between the popular kids and the outsiders. Soon they all have a deeper problem to deal with.

I caught this on Netfilx b/c I saw it would soon be unavailable. That was my bad. There is nothing redeeming about this movie. The acting is wooden. The plot is a mismatch of tropes that never deliver. The effects are so bad that they sail right by comical.
Spoiler: show

Strangeland
Image
A psycho on the Internet uses the handle, "Captain Howdy" to lure teens. After the abduction of his daughter Genevieve, detective Mike Gage is on the case.

Wow. Where to start with this? The most interesting thing about this movie is Dee Snider. He play a very convincing psycho path. Robert Englund has a small role as a very believable hick but that is about all this movie has going for it.
Spoiler: show

The Lost Tribe
Image
After a devastating boat crash, a group of friends are stranded on an uncharted island where they encounter an ancient tribe of humanoid creatures.

Sort of a cross between Predator and The Descent. It sounds much more awesome than it really is. It was a good idea that turned out a C movie. What is sad is it was recast with new actors and a new director because the original version was so bad.
Spoiler: show

original trailer

The Ugly
Image
A female psychologist wants to understand the minds of a confessed serial killer who spent the last five years in a mental hospital because of his state.

There are some redeeming qualities in this movie. I like the black blood from the killers perspective and the way the movie's way of jumping between flash backs and the current time. The end was weak.
Spoiler: show

I was starting to get tired of bad and boring horror films bobby around the bottom of the netflix streaming selection. I decided to start throwing in some of my perennial favorites.

Creepshow
Image
Inspired by the E.C. comics of the 1950s, George A.Romero and Stephen King bring five tales of terror to the screen.

How can you not love a collaboration between George Romero and Stephen King? It is a classic.
Spoiler: show

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
Image
The next great psycho horror slasher has given a documentary crew exclusive access to his life as he plans his reign of terror over the sleepy town of Glen Echo, all the while deconstructing the conventions and archetypes of the horror genre for them.

Creep turned me on to this movie last year. It is one of my favorites. It starts out with genuine funny mockumentry look at slashers that turns into a slasher. It is a must watch film for any fan of horror.
Spoiler: show

Scream
Image
A killer known as "ghost face" begins killing off teenagers, and as the body count begins rising, one girl and her friends find themselves contemplating the "Rules" of horror films as they find themselves living in a real-life one.

The original meta-slasher movie still shines.
