I just recently watched this movie on Blu-Ray and they did an excellent job in remastering it for the Criterion Collection. For those who enjoy this movie, I highly recommend the sequel, Sanjuro.

This movie and its sequel can be found on Netflix Instant Stream, but it isn't HD... so I recommend finding a Blu-Ray copy if you can. :D

I will discuss more of the actual film next week once others have begun watching.

Probably won't watch this. I already stated before how much I don't like these types of movies.

but I don't like fighting movies

I won't watch Jackie Chan or movies like that. I despise these types of movies. I said when I signed up I won't watch them or horror movies but would be happy to watch any others.

I may one day if I can get my hands on a copy I don't have to buy. (In other words if someone send me a copy of this I would be more then happy to watch it.)

What constitutes a "fighting" movie to you? Any action movie? Any movie with any type of combat whatsoever? "Horror" is a pretty broad, yet fairly specific descriptor of a genre of film that I could see opting out of. And yeah, I'll buy Jackie Chan flicks as "fighting" movies since they exist to showcase martial arts and really not much else. Though in the case of a movie like Yojimbo there is much more to the movie than just samurai sword fights. It's an engaging, oft mimicked story and by all rights a cinematic masterpiece. Dismissing it because of the inclusion of swordfighting incidental to the film's setting and plot seems incredibly silly to me.

I don't like Martial Arts type movies (which I label fighting movies). War movies or other types of fighting I can watch. I have such an aversion to Martial arts movies that once I see it, it destroys the movie for me and even if I enjoyed it to that point I can't watch it. I also can't watch "horror" movies that give me nightmares.

I already talked about all this in the main thread.

I assumed there was martial arts in addition to the sword fighting, but if that is all there is, then I can give it a go. I openly admit if I assumed wrong.

What about gangster films? Do you dismiss the dramatic potency of a film like The Godfather because of the inclusion of gun violence? Like I said, Yojimbo is not a martial arts movie. It's a drama that has sword combat in it because it captures a setting in time where that is what happened when two (groups of) people had a disagreement.

I said I can watch other types of movies and it is just artial arts I have an aversion to. If I a mistaken and it doesn't have any martial arts then I apologize and will try to watch this movie this weekend.

Well sword fighting is a martial art. And there are scenes where people fight with swords. The point I'm trying to make is that this isn't a showcase for sword fighting the way a Jackie Chan movie is for kung fu. I'm just trying to understand your criteria. Would you skip West Side Story because it has scenes where gangs fight with melee weapons in the street? Street fighting is a martial art and the movie revolves around street gangs, but it's hardly a "fighting" movie...

There is nothing like Jackie Chan (Kung Fu, Karate, etc) martial arts to this film, and even the sword fighting scenes are not that long when they happen.

I had a much more measured response, but fuck it: What the hell is wrong with you?

I was prepared to be ready to roll my eyes at yet another subtitled Japanese film, seeing that G-Nitro was up to pick. But you did good man. This film is a classic, and I've been meaning to have an excuse to watch it for a long while now.

There's Asians in it - it must be a Kung Fu flick!

Seriously though, if you like Spaghetti Westerns, you'll like this film. Especially since this film is the original flick that A Fist Full of Dollars (which started the Spaghetti Western craze) is directly ripping off.

I want our resident Japanerds to take note of my championing of this flick, especially the next time a certain one of them wants to fling the term racist at me next time I point out that the Japanese stick their dicks in toddlers and each shit directly out of each others' asses.

It came down to the possibility of this or The Good, The Bad, The Weird.... but I figured going with a classic would get more love. Maybe I'll save G,B,W for next season. :D
