Moviebox 1/2 - 1/8: Pan's Labyrinth

Postby Govir » Jan 1st, 2011 @ 6:45pm

Image
In 1944 fascist Spain, a girl, fascinated with fairy-tales, is sent along with her pregnant mother to live with her new stepfather, a ruthless captain of the Spanish army. During the night, she meets a fairy who takes her to an old faun in the center of the labyrinth. He tells her she's a princess, but must prove her royalty by surviving three gruesome tasks. If she fails, she will never prove herself to be the the true princess and will never see her real father, the king, again.

I really liked this the last time I saw it, but it's been awhile. So I'm throwing it out there to Moviebox so I'll watch it again. It is no longer available on Netflix steaming however :(.

Really love this flick. Watched it twice. It's really pretty tough to sit through for multiple viewings though.

One of my favourite movies ever. Watched it native Spanish with subs first time, loved it. And yes, the fairy-munching Pale Man, played by Doug Jones (the guy who also plays Pan, and Abe Sapien and the Angel of Death in Hellboy), is easily one of the coolest people ever. Plus, the proper Spanish title is so awesome sounding: El laberinto del fauno.

First time I'll see this. It's one of those movies I hear about all the time, but never bothered to watch.

Having seen Hellboy I was skeptical going into it but it turned out to be one of my favorites of 2006.

"Pretty good" to you guys is more or less unwatchable to my refined palate, which it pretty much is.

Agreed. In fact, Hellboy 2 was on FX last night. That's some good stuff, especially the troll market. Guillermo Del Toro is probably one of the most visually imaginative directors around these days. I love that he keep journals for each of his movies that he shows to the public after release. It's really cool to see how his mind works and the characters he comes up with.

Pan's Labyrinth was a great movie.

The scene with Captain Vidal and the glass bottle in his hand set the whole tone of this movie for me. I didn't see that coming on my first viewing.

I rented this movie with the intent to re-watch it. Although I'd already seen it and liked it quite a bit I didn't remember much about it. I had some free time to watch it today and instead watched the Blu-ray of Predator I got for Christmas, and now Pan's Labyrinth is due back at the video store. I really did want to watch it again, but man, high-def Predator fucking rocked.

You need to get Netflix man.

Also, Predator on blu-ray is pretty great. I got it on black friday for like $8 and Predators for $10. Watched them back to back.

I actually watched this about two weeks ago completely on my volition. What it actually made me somewhat interested in the game that the director is working on with THQ

Even with posting this movie, I didn't get to rewatch it again until today. I think I had just enough time between viewings. I remembered the general plot, but was still surprised by certain things that I had forgotten.

I can't express how much I like this movie. I feel like there's multiple stories going on that all intertwine and the viewer can focus on whatever they want to.
