Love him or hate him, Patrick Joynt (AKA Mr. Karen Chu) is back to fill in for a once-again-absent Mike Cruz (who secretly hates the rest of us). What inane, vile things will spew from Patrick’s mouth this week? Listen in, find out, and then Digg the podcast because it was that awesome!

The Geekbox — Episode 40 (2009-11-18)
Wherein we discuss the return of our most polarizing guest host, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Modern Warfare 2, Dragon Age: Origins, really nerdy Magic: The Gathering rules arguments (we apologize in advance), The Boondock Saints II, really bad tattoos, the impending end of Dollhouse (but hopefully not Joss Whedon’s crazy career), the evil side of Alton Brown, and the upcoming Legendary Thread reunion. Starring Ryan Scott, Karen Chu, Andrew Fitch, Ryan Higgins, and Patrick Joynt.

What’s with all the Patrick hate? I throughly enjoyed his first appearance and was shocked when Ryan described all the negativity he was getting on the forum. He seemed neutered on this time around…Wonder what’s rolling around Karens purse.

Good show. When I started the podcast and heard Patrick was back on my first thought was to just skip it. And then I thought I’d go ahead and listen to it anyway so afterwards I could think up something witty and snarky to say on the comments page. (‘Cause, you know, that’s just more fun.) But the truth is, he was okay this time. The first time he was on he seemed to want to dominate the conversation and he seemed oh so amused with his own superior intelligence. (It really was sort of awful.) But with Karen there he seemed to want to add to the conversation as opposed to taking it over. Which is what makes a good guest. So nice job. Cringe though I did at the start I really enjoyed listening and I have no problem with Patrick coming back. (As long as, you know, Karen’s there too.) (I’m just saying.)
Thanks guys.

I enjoy Patrick on the show as he provides another point of view and seems to question things which leads to deeper discussion. Keep up the good work guys, love the show.

Hi people,
Just thought I’d say I’ve been enjoying the podcast. Too much hate going on with the comments. Maybe it’s because I’m English but I really don’t have a problem with this Patrick. Oh well.
Keep up the good work.

If I wanted earnestness, I would listen to Garnett on old 1up yours. I can’t stand Patrick. So what if cancer isn’t as bad the 2nd time around, it’s still cancer. We don’t need his smug condescending attitude on the show.
I can’t understand why this guy is unemployed. Perhaps if he weren’t throwing 55 hours into Dragon Age, Mr. Chu wouldn’t have to be the man bringing home the bacon.

Oh. Patrick wasn’t NEARLY as bad as last time, but he’s STILL the spawn of Satan.
Seriously. Why does everyone hate him so much? He’s not that bat. He’s not bad at all, really. He brings a new voice to the podcast and I enjoyed this episode.
Now that Ryan Scott…we need to do something about him.

This is only my second comment on this website but I wanted add my voice to the crowd that appreciates Patrick’s presence on the podcast. I think he had a good perspective and usually has relevant and interesting comments. In this episode he wasn’t condescending like people may have thought he was on his first appearance.
I would like to hear more about tabletop gaming if any of you have something to say about it. I have not actually played at all but I really enjoyed the podcasts the Penny-Arcade guys made of their playthrough from the 4thEd. D&D.

Probably old news, I just started Planescape: Torment and found a lot of unofficial patches (http://www.bootstrike.com/Torment/files.html). The widescreen patch makes the game actually look really good and I would highly recommend it for anyone who is starting any of the old Bioware/Infinity Engine games. Good luck with the game Fitch.

Ok, so I am a Magic: The gathering judge. “Limited” decks are from a sealed pool of cards that are limited to what you open, you build a deck out of the cards you have and then you play people with other limited decks, these decks must contain a minimum of 40 cards. This includes sealed and draft formats. Constructed decks are built beforehand and MUST contain a minimum of 60 cards. So Ryan was right, Also point of interest here is a break down of the most expensive cards and otherwise known as “The Power Nine”. Assuming you buy from a dealer so you know they are real.
Black Lotus $700, poor $1500+, mint
Ancestral Recall $500, poor $1000+, mint
Mox Sapphire $400, poor $850+ mint
Mox Jet $350, poor $800+ mint
Mox Perl $300, poor $700+ mint
Mox Ruby $250, poor $500+ mint

Mr chu’s been very enjoyable both times he’s been on the podcast. But I would be very interested in seeing him on some different podcast’s Out of the game, 4 guys 1 up etc. I’m not sure it would be a good idea to team him and Shawn Elliott together, the mirth and chaos might be too much to handle. I know it’s incredibly unlikely but him appearing on something like the penny arcade d&d would be an amazing experience.

Well, if you’re just gonna patronize your listeners by having Patrick back on, I refuse to listen to this podcast anymore. A podcast with people who have no regard for the wellbeing of their listeners does not deserve to be read. The man hurt me, deep, in my ears. And I don’t have to take this.

To all the Patrick haters (assuming you’re not all just joking) he was not as overbearing this time or whatever people are complaining about (I don’t get it either). I’ve enjoyed the show both times he’s been on.
On the topic of Magic: The Gathering, it’s so true how Magic players and tabletop RPG players look down on each other, and it’s hilarious. I never played Magic or any other CCG, and I’ve only been playing D&D for a short time, but both groups of people just need to accept that they are nerdy as hell.
p.s. I’d love to hear more tabletop RPG discussion if Patrick is on the show again
