That really sucks. Cancer not only takes a toll on the person who it embodies internally but also on everyone around them.

Like you said, there is a hole there, just this void which is a really weird feeling, but there are still all the memories in which if you never knew the person you or them would have never had which I always try to think about when a loved one is lost.
